Mockingbirds and racial injustice

Hi Everybody Hi!!!

For this edition of From The Desk of GaBBY, I want to talk about current events that have been going on concerning racial injustice.

Most of you, if not all, have seen the guilty verdict of Derek Chauvin, the police officer who killed George Floyd. I thought it was good to hear, but I feel like it was something very clear and it shouldn't have taken this long. But nevertheless, it is a step towards more accountability and more justice and I like to see that. But that same day, a girl my age was killed by police - Ma'Khia Bryant. As a young Black girl, I would love to see more communication with officers and communities to better help people in need. It is heartbreaking and I am praying for her family.

As I am growing up, the classes I take are also touching on these topics. In my English class, we have just finished reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and me and my parents watched the movie this weekend. It's amazing how much this old novel is a great representation of what people like me have gone through and what many people of color are still going through to this day. We have a ways to go, but I have hope things will get better because my generation is taking a stand for change.

Have you read or watched To Kill a Mockingbird before?

Love💜

Gabby
